While researching headshot photographers it was notable that the majority of them were based in London, one photographer bucking the trend is Michael Pollard is a well-established headshot photographer who is based in Manchester, His portfolio is quite extensive with a mixture of location & studio, colour & black and white. Looking at his work it seems he loves the very narrow depth of field and probably shoots with an 85mm prime around F1.4 I find this works with some of his images but on others such a narrow DOF produces an almost distorted feel to the image, I know getting the eyes sharp is paramount but to me a headshot needs to show the whole face sharp, in some of his images the eyes are tack sharp but the hair and ears are soft, it also makes it look like (and he may well have done so) he has added Gaussian blur to the edges of the image.
In his own words.
I’ve been photographing actors for many years and I consider myself very fortunate to work with actors at all stages in their careers, from those just finding their feet in the acting world to more established actors represented by the top agencies in Manchester, the North West and further afield. I understand the acting industry; the trends that come and go; the likes and dislikes of agents and casting directors; that every actor is unique and has strengths they can promote.
